UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

[Ambos] a database on ecological preservation in the United States of America

The key role of the United States in the preservation of distant ecosystems such as the Alaska tundra, the tropical Virgin Islands, the Florida Keys, as well as the infinite grasslands surrounding canyons and peaks, is of worldwide importance. Some bizarre examples of bison overexploitation, contrast with superb recovery plans. The long standing tradition of National Parks follows the Yellowstone trail, the temperate sequoia forests and wetlands sprouting from the endless Mississippi river, all of them images of nature that stay forever.

The U.S. protected area system contains categories not used in most of the rest of the American countries, with some important figures such as federal Forests and National Wildlife Refuges. The protection of nature is closely linked to the so-called Acts, a kind of declarations consisting of detailed programs, which change the statuos quo in terms of the nature-society relationship in the United States.

The database follows in most cases the official Catalogue, as well as the Endangered Species list issued by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
